Description
The municipality of Ansó, located in the Aragonese Pyrenees, has implemented a comprehensive plan to become a “Smart Village,” combining social innovation, environmental sustainability, and community participation. The project focuses on revitalising rural life through the promotion of sustainable tourism, digitalisation of local services, and training young people in new skills related to the green and circular economy. Key initiatives include the use of digital tools for natural resource management, the creation of a renewable energy interpretation centre, and the involvement of young people in environmental volunteering and local entrepreneurship projects. Ansó’s strategy has made the municipality an example of how technology can reinforce local identity and improve quality of life in depopulated areas.
Innovation
Ansó has developed a transition strategy towards a Smart Village model by integrating sustainability, digitalisation, and the circular economy. Digital technologies have been incorporated into tourism and environmental management, while also promoting practical training for young people in green skills. The innovation lies in balancing tradition and technology: digital tools are used to preserve natural and cultural heritage, not replace it. Additionally, solutions for energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, and online citizen participation have been implemented, making the municipality a replicable model for other European rural areas.
Why it is inspiring
The case of Ansó shows that rural revitalisation can be achieved without losing local essence. Through the active involvement of young people, residents, and local authorities, the municipality has diversified its economy, attracted sustainable tourism, and improved public services through digitalisation. Collaboration across generations and sectors has strengthened the social fabric and created new employment and learning opportunities. Its holistic approach, based on community, sustainability, and technology, makes Ansó a European reference for the smart development of small rural municipalities.
